Kiezmobil in it’s last steps. Saturday the 16.07...

Kiezmobil in it’s last steps.

Saturday the 16.07 we’ve been creative again on the kiezmobil. We colored, we painted, we cut, we varnished, we planned, we ate delicious buttermilkcake thanks to judith ;) , we designed, we constructed and we enjoyed the sunny day in front of ida nowhere, donaustr.79. But aswell the workshops @Streuobstwiese during 48h Neukölln and in the Gemeinschaftswerkstatt Mareschstr.10 were productive and really nice. The neighbourhood from young to old joined the workshops and got creative and colorful on the tabletops. Kids were building and screwing the Kiezmobil together and painting their own kiez. Here is a short overview! Enjoy and come by, when we call the next time for the workshop “Kiezmobil - Pimp das Mobil!”. Therefore check th enews on the kiezmobil blog: kiezmobil.tumblr.com

See u there!

Summit on Sustainable Commerce and Small Business

This September, our friends at Etsy have organised a Summit, which promises to be interesting for anyone interested in setting up and running a small business.

The conference will be organized loosely around the entire process of coming up with an idea, turning it into a product, taking it to market, and building a business that is mindful and sustainable.

It also promises to offer the potential for some interesting dialogues, with speakers like Douglas Rushkoff.

Etsy have kindly offered a 10 Euro discount for betahaus and ODC members - it can be found at the entrance to ODC.

On the 13th of july Trial & Error joined the demonstration...

On the 13th of july Trial & Error joined the demonstration against the recent desicion to cut the funding for several youth clubs in Berlin Neukölln - which would mean that many of them would close allready this september. Around 350 people showed up to support the demonstration. Eventually the desicion to cut the budget was taken back, but it is still unclear what will happen, as so far no agreement has been reached on how to cover the holes in the budget.

Only few time left – please help and support us!

August 13th our crowd funding campaign on startnext.de will end. Until that day we need enough people to support us with a donation to gather a total amount of 2500 euro. If we don’t hit that amount all donations will be payed back and we won’t see any of it…

GRL Germany wants to get a strong projector for our project Light Rider. We want to be able to run mobile guerilla projections even with no budget involved in the event. We would be independent from funding (to pay for projector rent), spontaneous and could provide the whole set up to other groups who want to creatively use it for their artistic, political, or local mission.

If you think it is a good idea for us to get more independent please help us with a small (or big!) donation!

Thank you so much for your support!

Next Light Rider + blitzTag event Friday 22nd July

This Friday 22nd July we are bringing the Light Rider out to Berlin-Neukölln one more time. It will be the last chance to tag walls in this neighbourhood using blitzTag for the next couple of weeks. If you have missed our previous events along Karl-Marx-Straße make sure you come along this time! There is even two meeting points this time:

from 22:30h, Karl-Marx-Straße 110 (U-Bahn: Karl-Marx-Straße)

from 00:15h, Karl-Marx-Str. 231-235 (S-Bahn Neukölln)

As usual see our Twitter stream that night to stay updated!

Light Rider night #3

Friday night we went out with the Light Rider for the third time to light-bomb walls along Berlin-Neuköllns busy main street Karl-Marx-Straße. Thank you to all of you who came along, stopped by, wrote with us and created new styles!

If you missed it, don’t worry! There will be our next event in the same neighborhood next Friday 22nd of July. Exact location to be published shortly!

GRL Germany at Vigo Transforma

We’ve just returned, well tanned (well, burnt in one case), from Vigo, Spain, where we were fortunate enough to be invited to do two installations of blitzTag and LED Throwies at the Vigo Transforma Festival.

Bauhaus Workshops: Learning, then Sharing

Over the last few months, it has been our great joy and privilege to work with the Students of Bauhaus University on the Schlaue Materialien course.

Our objectives were to engage the students in action processes, and open design principles.

We did this by creating space and context for them to discover and explore their interests and help them discover the seeds of inspiration that could lead to further projects, ideas and collaborations. We engaged them in 3 Workshops - the 4th to be created by them, will be a MakerLab at the Rundgang.

These workshops were:

Starch Plastic Lab
The students were encouraged to explore what could be done and created with a simple starch plastic recipe, to experiment, create and learn from one another.

Sensors Workshop
Visiting a recycling center to gather old electronic components, learning how to identify and use sensors, and a crash course in Arduino.

Hackerthon
A 48 Hour Hacker Marathon, in which students collaborated in teams to create ideas of their own choosing. Fueled by Club Mate, Coffee Beer and Creative Energy. The outcomes from the hackerthon can be seen below. As this is a part of the process, not the end, we look forward to seeing how the students take these projects forward.

Team Textile Playground

Team textile playground, started out as team tent. Their objectives was to develop a tent that would teach kids about electronics through play and encourage them to engage.

One of the most exciting developments for me was Evelyn's self made headphones building on the work of the MIT . This is a prime example of one of the points we were hoping to make about Open Design, and Open Processes. Taking an idea, playing with it, and producing something radically new. Evelyn I encourage you to make a video (in english) on how to do this also, you will be sure to get some (much deserved) attention.

Details of how to make Karen's luminous beach can be found here, and gives you insights on how to work with sensors, create watertight bags, and use cornstarch to great effect.

I hope to put the other instructions here as they arrive *coughs loudly in a blatant hint to students*. [Note to students -There is no set format, just make your instructions clear].

Team Scarf

Team Scarf started with the premise of designing scarfs that would respond to and interact with their external environments.

[vimeo 25022810]

Team Guerilla Recycling

Team Guerilla Recyling started with the idea to hack some scales to engage the person being weighed in a different way.

[vimeo 25022703]

Team Lifecycle

Team Lifecycle wanted to explore products which lived and died.

[vimeo 25022524]

Team Lifecycle's documentation can be found here, there is some provocative stuff here I feel that warrants further exploration.

Team Colour Sensor

Team Colour Sensor wanted to make a Device that would convert colour to sound.

Reflecting on the process

The more defined the objective the more defined the outcome - this is evidenced in the projects themselves.

Storytelling and Energy - Storytelling and reflection should in fact be an additional part of the process. There should be a break in between for reflection, and a workshop on how to tell stories and present. Energy levels were low because students had very little sleep.

There is more reflection to be documented, but if I try and get it all in, this wont ever get out. Release early, release often. Keep watching for updates.

The final part of the process will be a MakerLab run by the students to share what they learned with the public. Completing the loop, and starting other people on the path of exploration.
