Kick Arse Christmas

So the time of Yule is nearly upon us. From pagan event to a month long festival of Hyperconsumption.

But this year we have the space and tools with which to make our own gifts, and to help others aquire these skills. Giving needn't just mean "buying for", but maybe the opportunity for people to contribute time, love and thought into their acts, rather than merely meeting an annual expectation.

So what can we do? What can we offer, create, and what skills can we share?

At this event we'll explore what we can make and show other people to make for Christmas, and schedule events for December. Including perhaps a Christmas Party (or multiple parties :)).

Let's Remix/Hack Christmas

Open Up

Open Design Meeting

OPEN UP will give participants insights into the processes, methods and associated challenges of the Open Design process. The workshop will begin with an overview of Open Design principles, participants will then engage in an Open Design iterative process, where they build and reiterate an existing patented design. The workshop will end with an Open Space discussion of the benefits, challenges and potential solutions as to how to apply Open Design principles to this specific business case, exploring in depth the opportunities and threats with the original designer.

This workshop is particularly aimed at individuals who have no previous experience of Open Design or Open Culture in general. It represents an opportunity to bridge the communication and knowledge gaps using an action process - understanding by doing.

The workshop will be held at Open Design City, a collaborative production space in Kreuzberg where the space itself is in constant reiteration in response to the needs of the community.

Participation is free of charge. However, we expect you to support us with the documentation of the workshop – in the form of texts, photos or video contributions.

The workshop will be led by Jay Cousins, in collaboration with Christoph Doering. Please note that the workshop language will be English!

In case the registration link doesn't work, please send an email to ek [at] transmediale.de

Tell us something about your professional background and about what you expect from the workshop. Please note that we can only accept a maximum of 25 people to take part, otherwise it won’t be possible to get into a productive working mode. Please send your application e-mail before November 22. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Design Smash

“3…2…1… The horn blows and a group of designers throw back a stiff drink before plunging into  work. They are producing a laser-cut object… a design that will hit the shelves in under a week. They have 4 hours to accomplish what most do in a month, but armed with liquid bravery, a bit of training and all the materials they need, they smash out a design as you party around them. At the end of the night, you decide who gets the biggest prize and the pieces are produced in front of you… on-the-spot.”

Welcome to DesignSmash.

Share your cooking skills at Open Design City.

This Tuesday at Open Design City, resident Citizen Mark Splatter has initiated the first of our Citizen dinners. At this event, we will share food, time and stories - getting to know new members better, and scheduling new events for the up coming months.

It's going to be fast, loose and social.

Bring your materials (AKA food), along with the recipe, only bring preprepared dishes for convenience (we have a small hob and 2 pans FYI, but we don't want to create bottle necks, so if you really want to cook something fresh, let us know in advance or bring your own cooking gear).

Bring kitchen supplies.

Entry: Free (as long as you bring food).

Enable Session VII: A Visual Search

Imagine a way to easily map and search for curious spots in your city based on any interest or information…
Imagine instant updates, past, present and future events portrayed visually…
Imagine new ways to link and compare different perspectives of the city…
We are interested in creating dynamic new way of visualising our city – a user-generated online map, that can be added to and searchable by time, space, and participants

.

Visualization from the book City Crawlers by Your Neighbours

We are looking to map and visualize data and info online. We are trying to develop new ways of browsing through all the information available in the web.

And we are looking for anybody that is interested in it and would like to share some ideas.

The session VII will take place at Open Design City. Wednesday 3rd of November at 19:30

Enable Berlin Session VI: Our prototyping results

http://vimeo.com/15762984

Here is the video from our last session on Wednesday 6th of October

The concepts proposed at the session was one of the winners at the PayPal brief posted at Jovoto.
This is not just great news because it proves that we are working in the right direction, but is a first step in making our process suistanable.

We would like to thanks everybody that came to the session: Sam Muirhead, Adriana Uribe Spinel, Rica Amaral, Jay Cousins, Christophe Vaillant, PZuazua, Florian Hauk, and Alexander. And specially Open Design City for being the place to spark this creativity and new ways of working.
