ODC Basic: Electronics

Philip Steffan offers:

An introduction into basic electronics for everyone, on Thursday 7th October, 19.00-21.00:

- Quick recap: Electricity and circuits
- Cheap and easy to use electronic parts
- Enhancing your stuff with blinking things
- Prototyping and soldering
- Smart electronics and (so called) Physical Computing

Forgot what they told you in school about electronics? Want to learn
how to build little circuits for fun? Our basic Electronics course for
everyone shows you how to handle the most common parts like LEDs and
transistors and how to combine them. We'll also have a lookout on
building smart circuits with programmable micro controllers like the
Arduino. (There will be a separate class focusing on the latter.)

This is the first of our ODC Basic courses, over the coming weeks we will be offering this format as a regular event, giving you the opportunity to teach/learn the basics of any craft. If you want to schedule your own basic's event, or request one why not come to our Events Event.

The Mother of All ODC Events: Literally

We have a dream.

That every night and day something cool is happening at Open Design City (it's pretty cool already, but we want moar). Whether a presentation that challenges your thinking, a workshop that empowers your creativity, or a class which expands your skills, or anything else you desire (we are as ever Open).

But this shouldn't be our dream alone. This is your space to shape and create. We want to give you the opportunities to host your events within the ODC.

So far this has been happening ad hoc, and we have had great successes including:

3d face scanning workshop: By Friedrich Kirschner
Crafting Circuits: By Philip Steffan and Julia Schreiber
Upcycling Workshop: By Trial and Error Kulturlabor
Screen Printing Class: By Tracy Rolling, and Mark Splatter
Presentations (most notably Otto von Busch): Arranged by Christophe Valliant
The Enable Berlin Sessions: By Pedro Pineda
Cook your own lampshades: By Jay Cousins, Christopher Doering and Mendel Heit
Design Thinking: By Invented Here
Mozilla Drumbeat: By Michelle Thorne
DMY Maker Lab: The daddy of Open Design City

Now we want to scale it up. Have more community events, for learning, for fun and even for profit (for you and for us).

At this event we'll give you some tips on making your own events happen at Open Design City as well as connecting you to the broader Berlin network. We also have an announcement on something as big, epic and exciting as the DMY Maker Lab (if not even bigger).

So come along on Monday 4th October from 7pm and help shape Open Design City's community calendar. We aim to keep it quick so we can enjoy the social side.

Afterward's you may also want to hang out with the Bausteln crowd.

Talk to me about: “why every creative city needs a fablab” – Thursday, 16.9.2010, 19 – 21 Uhr:

Why should every creative city need a fab lab? Hell I'd say why should every city, town and community should have an Open Design City.

But that's the object of this discussion, so feel free to come along and participate in the dialogue.

This discussion makes the case for Fab Labs everywhere, and hopefully we'll also receive some challenges for a healthy and flourishing dialogue. We've invited key decision makers and activists from Berlin and Lisbon to address the topic of "why every creative city needs a fab lab". I wish I were there.

Talk-Guests:

Lisbon:
Tiago Cid, advisor of the city councilor Graca Fonseca, working on the first FabLab in Lisbon
Leo Xavier, founder of the first coworking space in Lisbon, Liberdade 229

Berlin:
Christopher Doering, co-founder of the OpenDesignCity
Katrin Tobies, advisor Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Women's Issues
Martina Zeyen, Network Manager, Create Berlin

Open Design City meets Schmiede: where creative playgrounds collide

I'm off to Schmiede in Hallein in a couple of weeks, and still have no idea what it's about. But having explored such spaces before both at Palomar5, at the DMY maker lab and at Open Design City I'm very excited. When you get awesome people together and give them freedom, great things happen.

Having checked the Schmiede site, there seems to be quite a contingent going from Berlin, so why not get started early.

Schmiede crew consider yourself invited to Open Design City, ODC crew come and meet even more cool people than you already know.

Evening will begin with a few spontaneous informal presentations, and then swiftly slip into a freestyle get together. We'll set up a projector so people can show movies and footage, but powerpoint is outlawed and everyone gets 5 minutes max, with opportunity for more later if the mood takes us.

Bring your passions, share them and mingle your brains.

Thursday 9th September, 19:00 Open Design City, 19-20 Prinzessinen Strasse, Berlin

Schmiederites I look forward to meeting you.

Don´t miss tomorrows Scanlabor!
