... is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to create images, animations, and interactions. 

 

Android

... is an open source operating system for devices that are packed with sensors, such as touchscreens, cameras, microphones, gps, accelerometers… 

... we just want to put those two things... together :-)

 

Part 1 : Hello World | Sat Sep 29th

Prerequisite: A previous workshop from Jesse, or previous experience with Processing/Programming

Note: an actual Android device is encouraged, but not necessary, as it is possible to program for the Emulator

 

We will start by making several 'Hello World' programs for the emulator and actual devices, showcasing how basic Processing code works when moved onto a different screen/processor, and how sensors are accessed and utilized.

 

Part 2 : Touch Me, Touch You | Sun Sep 30th

 

On this day, every participant will design and develop a small Android App. While participants are encouraged to come up with their own ideas as to what they want to develop over the course of this workshop (the more useful for your daily art practice the better), we will focus our interaction on creative applications using the touch screen and several sensors...

He has used Processing to create live visuals, light up large led matrices, drive laser cutters, control 3D puppets, and make custom Android applications.

Directed Projects with Processing

Processing

... is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to create images, animations, and interactions. 

Initially developed to serve as a software sketchbook and to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context, Processing also has evolved into a tool for generating finished professional work. Today, there are tens of thousands of students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists who use Processing for learning, prototyping, and production.

In this two-day workshop, we will work together to assess an artistic project from each participant, and build towards the execution of the idea using simple code.

 

 

Part 1 : Triaging the possible | Sat Sep 22nd

Prerequisite: A previous workshop from Jesse, or previous experience with Processing/Programming

 

The beginning day of this workshop will start in a traditional talk format, and discover the needs and desires of the participants. We will assess the tools, libraries, and techniques needed to bring the idea to fruition. Each participant will develop a short action plan, detailing the steps needed to develop the project.

Examples  of possible projects could include realtime VJ-ing, communication to and from Arduino, posting to/reading from Twitter, computer vision, motion tracking, a simple Android program, etc. Participants are encouraged to bring a 'modest' project that fits within their current scope of artistic research.

 

Part 2 : Solving the impossible | Sun Sep 23rd

 

Code code code! Testing! Networking! Projecting! Interacting! Rinse. Repeat.

Part 1 : Everything you always wanted to know about Processing but were afraid to ask | Sat Sep 15th

Prerequisite: No previous programming experience required, just an open mind and an idea of how you would like to use Processing in your work.

 

The beginning half of this workshop will start in a traditional talk format, and explain the basics of type-based programming, and things like variables, datatypes, methods, and functions (don't be scared, it's easy!!).

The remaining half will be conducted in a open format, with questions, discussion, and hands-on coding in discovering methods and techniques.

 

Part 2 : Applied Learning and Problem Solving with Processing | Sun Sep 16th

Prerequisite: Part 1 of this workshop, a previous workshop from me, or previous experience with Processing

 

During the first half of this workshop, participants will use hands-on techniques in order to complete exercises designed to give them experience in problem solving using Processing.

For the second half of the workshop, Jesse will help participants design a custom program featuring one or more modes of interaction.
